The 2009 and second winner since the inception of the Technology Award is: Plainfield Central School, Plainfield, CT, Jerry Davis, Principal and James Salsich.


Purpose:
NELMS seeks to recognize individuals or groups who utilize meaningful technology to enhance student learning at the middle level.


Selection Criteria
:

  • Demonstrates technology as an essential component of meaningful learning for young adolescents
  • Reflects fundamental ideas contained in the middle level school documents, Turning Points 2000,
    This We Believe, and Breaking Ranks in the Middle.
  • Demonstrates how the NETS-S (National Educational Technology Standards for Students) standards were addressed. (See http://cnets.iste.org/students/s_stands.html)

Examples: The selection committee will consider projects such as, but not limited to:

  • Classroom instruction that integrates technology (including unified arts, and special education)
  • Web sites (including podcasts, blogs, and message boards)
  • School or community activities integrating technology


Application Process/Deadline
: The application must include the following materials submitted as one packet. The Nominator must collect and send all materials in one packet to: NELMS, 460 Boston Street, Suite 4, Topsfield, MA 01983. The Packet must be received by 4:30pm on January 7, 2011.

  • A statement of 1,250 words or less, describing how the work meets the criteria
  • Digital evidence that illustrates the intent and key components of the project submitted on a CD-ROM, a hyperlink to a Web site, video, or other similar media
  • Three letters of support: one from a student or group of students, one from a teacher not involved in the project, and one from a building administrator

Recognition: Recipients will be recognized at the Sunday banquet at our Annual Conference and in Mid Lines, the NELMS Newspaper. This recipient(s) will also receive a one-day registration to the Annual Conference, a one-year individual or group membership, and up to $300 worth of NELMS products or services.
