A thank you letter to Lea McDonald
(an A.C. presenter)
Hi Lea,
I attended two of your sessions at the NELMS conference a couple weeks ago; Managing the Differentiated Classroom and Classroom Instruction That Works. I just wanted to drop a quick note and let you know that I used some of what I learned in the classroom and it worked beautifully.
I teach 6th grade math and we are having a test today. To review, I was really interested in trying out the guided note-taking, alongside what I think you called a gallery walk. I had kids get in to groups of 3-4 and gave each group one topic that they had to create a poster on. Their poster had to include some sort of word description or definition, a visual representation, and at least two examples. I also gave them a model from which to work. That part of it took about one class period (once we had gone over the previous night's hw). Students had their note-taking guides with them and for homework, had to highlight or circle any questions they had for the next day. The next day, students finished up posters and then we hung them around the room. Students then traveled in different groups to complete their note-taking guides, using the posters. I was able to facilitate, clear up any misunderstandings, answer individual questions, etc. I asked the students what they thought of this way to review and they were extremely positive about it and felt confident going into the test as a result. We'll see if the scores are as positive, but I am optimistic.
It was a very effective strategy and I just wanted to thank you for inspiring me! My students thank you as well :) I'm also wondering if you would mind sending me one of your sample note-taking guides, so I can see what you use.
Sincerely,
Stephanie
